What Readers Say
Reading Find the Pearl in Your Pain by Kimberly Gillespie was an emotional experience from start to finish. This memoir is a deeply heartfelt and inspiring account of how even the most difficult experiences can be transformed into purpose, healing, and beauty. Kimberly’s story begins with a poignant discovery: a note among her late mother Judy Fraser’s belongings, comparing life’s hardships to the way a pearl forms—from an irritant inside an oyster. That simple but profound analogy becomes the backbone of the book: there is no pearl without pain. Judy Fraser, tragically killed by her narcissistic husband after 47 years of marriage, left behind not only a legacy of strength, but a daughter brave enough to tell the truth with honesty and grace. Kimberly’s writing is compassionate, candid, and deeply personal. She opens up about her own struggles—relationship challenges, domestic abuse, personal loss, and the scars of generational trauma—with vulnerability and resilience. Her reflections on her mother’s quiet strength show how love, legacy, and perseverance can guide us through the darkest times. I felt like I truly got to know Judy on a personal level. The book offers powerful comfort to anyone walking through pain, reminding us that suffering doesn’t have to define us. Instead, as Kimberly emphasizes, pain can be a catalyst for growth, healing, and self-discovery. You are NOT alone. Her voice is authentic and encouraging—perfect for anyone navigating grief, confusion, anxiety, fear, or despair. Chapter 5 hit especially close to home for me as the co-host of Enmeshed with Amanda and Pam, a true crime podcast that explores tangled family dynamics. Kimberly’s willingness to dive into generational pain—something we don’t just talk about on the show, but live, share, and grow through—was powerful and validating. What an honor to be included and referenced in a story so full of grace, grief, and growth. When I passed by Kimberly’s childhood home during a visit, it looked like the picture of peace—a beautiful house in a charming neighborhood. But as we know all too well, appearances can be deceiving. You never truly know what happens behind closed doors. Kimberly’s ability to turn suffering into something beautiful is a roadmap for those still learning to find the pearl in their own pain. This book is for anyone who has loved and lost, fought to heal, or struggled to break free from emotional patterns of the past. Thank you, Kimberly, for your strength, your voice, and your advocacy for Gillian’s Place. While we only had snippets of your story on our first podcast episode, your book explains everything in detail. (And a big thank you to your former neighbor who fearlessly shared this tragic story with me.) Your message—that we can learn, grow, and find beauty through pain—will stay with me long after the final page. ~Pamela Scott Co-host of Enmeshed: True Crime Podcast with Amanda and Pam
Amazing and inspirational true story of the resilience and strength of someone capable of taking a horrible tragedy out of her control, and diving deep into her recovery. This is the epitome of strength, perseverance and perspective and touches your soul with each word, page and chapter. I am in awe of the author's ability to choose to live life from such a beautiful perspective instead of living it painfully in a victim mentality. This book will change you! And offers hope to anyone struggling with their own trauma. I am in awe of her ability to tell the story, and to walk through the process of turning tragedy from trauma into the fuel to honor her mom better than anyone could ever imagine! This touches on so many facets of life but you will leave in awe of the resilience and the power one has deep down!
This book is a must read. It's honest, raw and unlike any self help book I've ever read about grief, trauma and pain. It's not full of rainbows, butterflies & teddy bears. I purchased this book to support Kimberly, not knowing how badly I needed to hear her words about pain. I couldn't put this book down except to wipe my tears. This past year has been the lowest year of my life post stroke. Kim's words reminded me to be kind, gentle & gracious with myself. Her words helped me to kick start my recovery journey again. She echoed my thoughts on losing a career we loved through no fault of our own and how painful it was to have to walk away. She explains it's not an easy road but eventually your pain starts to lessen. She doesn't just tell you to think positive. Thank you Kimberly for your words of wisdom and sharing your very personal unbelievable life story. I know this book won't be the last we hear from Kim but just the beginning. I can't wait to read about your next chapters. I have already recommended this book to several people. Very proud to hear how far you've come on your journey and to be able to call you a friend. Buy this for the person in your life struggling, needing to clear the fog from their brain due to the pain. *(Standing applause)
Find The Pearl in Your Pain is an enlightening read that courageously shines a light on a form of domestic violence that is often overlooked and difficult to recognize. The author brings a compassionate and insightful voice to a sensitive subject, making the book both impactful and moving. I like how the book not only raises awareness but also offers hope and guidance. The author’s personal experiences and thoughtful reflections create a sense of connection and understanding for readers who may be going through similar struggles. It's written with honesty, clarity, and a strong sense of purpose, making it accessible and relatable. I truly enjoyed reading this book. I believe it has the potential to help people—especially those currently facing or recovering from abusive situations—by showing them that healing is possible and that they are not alone.
I recently finished this book. It is a truly powerful story. Kim shares her difficult journey from childhood to her worst nightmare, making it into something so beautiful and meaningful. Her strength, determination, and persistence are truly admirable. She has given her mom a voice, and it's a beautiful testament to her love. While it's a very emotional read, it is no doubt helping many others who have been or may be in a similar situation. This is a powerful story of resilience and hope.
Very powerful and heartfelt. Kim's strength and courage gives hope and inspiration to anyone who has gone through trauma, abuse and heartbreak. She provides tools in how to heal from the trauma and how to show love and compassion for yourself.
It is an interesting but sad book as it’s based on a true story.
